Elito Revé y su charangonFriday 7 november - New Morning El Charangon d’Elio Reve is one of the most important orchestras in the history of modern Cuban music. Founded in 1956 by Elio Reve senior, this avant-garde ensemble reinvented the charanga in the late 1950s and adapted to timba in the 1990s under the leadership of Elio Reve junior. The history of El Charangon d’Elio Reve, in which both father and son have made their careers, is the history of the past 50 years of changing Cuban music. Elio Reve junior (AKA Elito) took over leadership of the Charangon in 1997 and mantained the changui rhythms while introducing elements of timba. "The orchestra has become one of the most popular in Cuba. Our form of music is unique and we're sticking to it... I try to preserve what has been done before and enrich it... We shouldn't lose sight of our music's structure and its roots, even if we modernise and adapt it to suit the tastes of today's audiences." Elito Reve is touring Europe this summer to promote his new and much acclaimed album Fresquecito. Recorded in Cuba with arrangements by Juan Manuel Ceruto, this album preserves the inimitable character of previous records in the Reve family's already expansive discography and is sure to please salsa-lovers worldwide. "What we play is not pure changui. There are also melodies to tug the heartstrings and get people moving their feet. What we do is Cuban popular music." Fresquecito won the Cubadisco prize for 2008.
